APRA-VA MEETING
March 10, 2011
Minutes:
The Winter 2010 meeting of the Virginia Chapter of APRA was held on Thursday, March 10, 2011 at UVA.
The meeting’s agenda and educational sessions were coordinated by Nick Sollog, Program Chair. The sessions included the following presenters/topics:
Session I:
Nick Sollog introduced our speaker, Debra “Deb” Johnson Darling. Deb has 23 years of fundraising experience having worked in various organizations in different roles. She is also a frequent speaker at fundraising events. She is currently Director of Prospect Development at W&L and her presentation was: “Proactive Research Successes!”
Deb discussed elements of success of W&L proactive work over the last 2 years. She shared various research profiles and reviewed their techniques for prospect management and tracking using Raiser’s Edge, as well as how to set up online alerts in order to capture current news on constituents. She has also developed ways to code “Future Prospects” and note information, including important news releases that can be pulled later. Deb states that everything is tracked in Raiser’s Edge and reports have been created in order to pull together specific data. She presented a slideshow which will be available online to APRA-VA members later.
Part 2:
For Deb’s second part of her presentation, she asked for attendees to submit their “burning research question.” Some of the questions submitted focused on best practices for organizing research, how gift officers use research/act on leads, and how many contacts should a gift officer have in his/her portfolio. Not only did Deb have the opportunity to answer the questions, but the entire group was able to give feedback and advice.
Session II (afternoon):
Webinar presented by Elizabeth Crabtree (Brown University) and Joyce Newton (Dartmouth College), “Approaches for Evaluating Wealth and Rating for Gift Capacity.”
Webinar discussed approaches for estimating giving capacity based on common wealth indicators, how to create rating systems, and how a uniform approach to rating gift capacity along with affinity and inclination assists in populating campaign tables and allows researchers to become better strategic partners in fundraising.
